Part P. What does it mean to you?
When did the new rules start?
- From 1st January 2005, anyone carrying out electrical work in homes and gardens in England and Wales have to follow the new rules in the Building Regulations. It even includes work that has been carried out professionally, by yourself or another family member or friend.
Why were the new rules introduced?
- To reduce the number of deaths, injuries and fires caused by faulty electrical installations.
- To make it harder for "cowboy builders" to leave electrical installations in an unsafe condition.
What to do if you need some electrical work done
- Refer to the Part P documentation to check if you need to tell your local authority's Building Control Department if you intend to do the work yourself.
- By using an Electrician who is registered with a Competent Persons Scheme. They will be able to self-certify that the work meets the required standards and that it has been notified to the local authority as required by Part P of the Building Regulations.
What will happen if the Building Regulations are not followed?
- The electrical installation might not be safe.
- You will have no record of the work done.
- You may have difficulty selling your home if you do not have the right electrical safety certificates.
- Your local authority's Building Control Department may insist that you put right faulty work.

How Can I Help?
- I am registered with ELECSA Competent Persons Scheme in conjunction with my business partner under "Chris & Bobs Electrical". We are monitored under this scheme and verified to be qualified and competent.
- As a standard we always certificate our work which is required under the BS7671 Regulations.
- Where required we also register any work that falls under the Part P regulations. A confirmation certificate from the Competent Persons Scheme will then be sent to you confirming that the job has been registered.
